DocketX / Can't afford a lawyer
Many parents handle custody and support hearings themselves, and courts provide forms and self-help for it. It is also the area where we are most insistent about the honest limit: when allegations of abuse, CPS involvement, or termination of parental rights are anywhere near your case, exhaust every path to a lawyer first.
Family cases run on the state's family code plus the civil rules: petitions, service, disclosures, temporary-orders hearings, mediation in many counties, and final orders. The paperwork is heavier than small claims but official form sets exist for the standard paths, and our Texas custody-procedure page quotes the controlling provisions verbatim.
Temporary-orders hearings matter enormously — they set the pattern the final order often follows. Prepare for them like finals: documents, a proposed schedule, and calm specifics about the child's actual week.

Some situations carry consequences that are hard or impossible to undo, and handling them alone is genuinely dangerous: criminal charges that risk jail, cases involving child protective services or termination of parental rights, appeals, immigration consequences, and complex property or custody disputes. If your case is one of these, exhaust the free options above and the state bar's lawyer referral service (referral consultations are typically low-cost) before going alone. We would rather lose you as a user than watch you lose something that mattered.
Not legal advice and not a law firm. We never promise outcomes: self-representation carries real risk, courts dismiss cases on procedure, and the honest version of help includes saying so. If you qualify for free legal aid, take it.
